Advice and Tips on Skid Steers

November 15th, 2009

If you are in the construction business you have probably at least seen a machine that is called a slip Steer Loader.  You may also have heard it referred to as a skid Loader or even a Bobcat.  No matter what name you put to this machine, it has become one of the most popular machines on jobsites across the nation as well as for the land owner with twenty acres who require a machine around to maintain their property.  It is vital before making a decision to buy a slide steer that you know the basics about what makes up this machine so you may have an idea of what you are getting into.

1.  Controls : The controls of a skid Loader are some of the most significant items within the whole machine.  If you aren’t able to understand the controls and simply use them , you won’t get the efficiency out of the machine that you hope to.  There are 3 main types of controls and those are mechanical, pilot, and electronic.  All 3 types of their benefits and drawbacks so make sure you try out these sorts of controls to find out which type you are most ok with.  The industry is moving away from mechanical controls and more towards pilot and electronic so keep this under consideration.

Two.  Coupler : The coupler on your Bobcat is the second most important part of this machine.  This is where you can hook on a bucket, set of forks, a brush, and any other work tool that you might imagine.  This item is what makes your machine as versatile as you want it to be.  Luckily enough, all of the producers of this product have the same interface so irrespective of what gear company you go with, any tool that’s make for this machine will fit on your machine.  Some corporations offer 2 kinds of couplers which are manual and hydraulic.  Try out both to determine which one you are most ok with.

3.  Lifting Pattern : The 3rd and final item that falls into the Skid Steer basics program is the lifting trail of the lifting arms.  There are 2 different lifting paths that all manufacturers use.  Different sizes of machines have different lifting paths so you will need to know what you do with the machine and a little bit of information on the lifting path to make sure you get the right machine for your job.  The two linkage options are vertical lift and radial lift and more information on these linkages can be discovered online or at your local apparatus manufacturer.
