Three Vehicles That Prove You Should Be Cruising In A Pre-Owned Automobile.

January 3rd, 2010

There are many reasons that people decide to buy older models of cars. Many people prefer older cars because they are a lot more affordable. Another good reason that people buy older cars is because the parts used to make these cars were much higher quality than those that are used for newer cars. Although there are many used cars to choose from, three available options are the Oldsmobile Ciera, the Ford Contour, and the Mazda 626. All three of these cars are different and have different advantages and disadvantages. It’s best to make sure you do a lot of research on these cars before purchasing one. If you do have problems with your used car, there are a lot of GM repair manuals available to help you fix these problems right at your own home, instead of having to pay a mechanic.

The Oldsmobile Ciera was first manufactured in 1982 with three options. These three options were a two door coupe, a four door sedan or a four door wagon. This car was manufactured by GM, and has the same motor as many other similar GM cars that were manufactured the same years. This car isn’t known to be very reliable and if you have one you should definantley own a Oldsmobile Cierra repair manual. If you are looking for something that is going to need little more than routine maintenance, this may not be the car for you because things do tend to break on this car. This car was only manufactured until 1996 so any used Oldsmobile Ciera is going to be more than 10 years old. If you’re looking for a used car, make sure to research the Oldsmobile Ciera, and the advantages and disadvantages of owning this car.

The Ford Contour was produced from 1995 to 2000 and many Ford Contour Repair Manual are available. Most models of this car are going to be a lot newer than the Oldsmobile Ciera which usually means the cars are in better shape and have a lot less miles. This car was manufactured as a four door sedan and sold all over the world. One big disadvantage that the Ford Contour has is that it doesn’t have very much leg room which can make it a little uncomfortable on long rides, especially if you fill the car to its capacity. The engine in the Ford Contour is very powerful and has plenty of power for the average driver. The suspension and steering on this vehicle is also very good so you’ll always feel comfortable and safe while driving this car. If you’re looking for a practical four door sedan that is reliable and easy to drive, check out a used Ford Contour.

The Mazda 626 was first manufactured in 1981 and was manufactured until 2007. This car was most popular between the mid to late 90´s and in that decade you will find a plethera of Mazda 626 Chiltons Manual . This car has advantages and disadvantages as far as comfort. Front seat passengers have plenty of extra leg and head space but if you’re sitting in the back seat than you are not so fortunate. A lack of space in the back seat of the Mazda 626 can make it uncomfortable to fit a lot of people in this car, or go for a long trip. This car is very reliable and if you buy a used car with high mileage, than you can be sure that your car will still last you for years without too many problems. The Mazda 626 is a quality made car that is very reliable.

Although there are many different options for used cars, it’s best to think about what you are going to be comfortable in, and how much you can really afford on maintenance. If you’re looking for something that has it all, check out either the Ford Contour or the Mazda 626 and be sure to purchase an automotive repair manual for these vehicles.

Car Auctions – Tips and Advices

June 23rd, 2009

Car auctions are great ways to purchase cars at deep discount.  Anything from older, junk fixer uppers to great newer cars even to expensive luxury models can be found. Many people purchase cars this way from car auctions either for themselves or to sell at a profit. A little information can make an auction an even better experience.

One possible problem is that the purchase might not be a good one.  There are lemons at auctions too.  Cars sold at such auctions are generally sold according to used car laws which tend to make it an as is sale.  Remember the old Sesame Street skit in which a man looks over a car with “as is” in the window.  As he inspects the car he asks a lot of questions to which the salesman always responds “as is”.  Finally the man agrees to buy the car, pays for it, but when he opens the door to get into the car it falls to pieces.  He exclaims “I want the car as was!”  Nobody wants to become that guy.

Reputable car auctions give buyers ample opportunities to check out the cars before bidding or purchase. Avoid the auctions that don’t. Spend time at the facility before the auction begins. Look around and test drive the cars of interest. Always have on site car knowledge, meaning bring a mechanic who knows about cars if you don’t. If that isn’t possible, at least drive the car for an inspection during the test drive. Decent inspections take only a few minutes to check the important elements of the car including the motor, belts, brakes, and the like. Anyone with a decent eye can check the body, interior and other physical elements for wear and tear.

Another problem is inherent in auctions. People assume that the car auction price will be a great deal, but often it ends up being more expensive than purchasing the item through a normal sales process. That holds true for car auctions too.  The car’s value can be quickly eclipsed by excited bidding.  There are also fees to pay, so pay close attention.  Easily accessible date on car values is standard issue for auction buyers.  No need to even look it up in advance since the information is online and phones can access it.  Don’t pay more than the car is worth, even if it’s a coveted antique.

Remember, auctions can be great deals. But come armed with information and expertise. If a deal appears too good to be true, it is, even at car auctions.

Auto Repair Savings

June 18th, 2009

One of the easiest ways to save money on car repairs is to not pay for things that are covered under warranty. This sounds simple enough, but warrantees supplied by vehicle manufacturers have changed over the years. It is wise for the owner to find out about the warranty and exactly what is covered.

It is also the drivers responsibility to keep up on vehicle maintenance So that this warranty can be enforced. For example, if the vehicle owner fails to follow the recommended maintenance schedule, certain car problems may not be covered repairs. If the engine has an internal failure the car owner may be asked to supply proof that the maintenance schedule was followed.

The only time the dealership asks for this proof is when signs of lack of maintenance are present. If the engine is filled with sludge and the failure was due to lack of lubrication. This is an indication of lack of maintenance. At this point, it is up to the dealerships repair center to notify the vehicle manufacturer that the situation exists. The negotiation for the repair costs will begin from this point.

Save money on car repairs

This is particularly important on the newer cars that now have the 10 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Over this long period of time there are even greater chances for covered repairs. Being pro active with maintenance is more inportant. If you perform Diy car repairs make sure you save your auto parts reciepts just in case.

Note that manufacturers warranties do not cover malfunctions caused by accidents, floods, misuse, high performance modifications, poor maintenance, and also problems resulting from poor quality fuel. If your electronic fuel injector rusts from water in the fuel then this might not be a covered repair.

Some times vehicle owners will make modifications to their automobile with out thinking it through. Example if you remove the factory air cleaner assembly and replace it with a high performance, cold air intake like a K&N unit, you must save the vehicle’s original parts for possible warranty service.

With 10 year 100,000 mile warranties, and now car loans that have payment schedules for up to seven years people are keeping their vehicles longer. Learning the details about your warranty and not paying for things that are covered have the opportunity to save a lot of money during the vehicles 10 to 15 year life span.

Your automobile owner manuals will provide the warranty information. Whenever there are questions about what is covered under the warranty. Review this section of your owners manual carefully. Also make sure you use the one 800-number in your owner’s guide if you have any questions.

The customer care line operating expenses are included in the price of your vehicle. Why not get what you paid for and use this service to learn more about your specific vehicle. And what auto repairs may be covered.

Car Maintenance – The Common Misconceptions That Cost You Money

May 9th, 2009

Millions of people are fooled into accepting the myths by commercial advertisement and less-than-scrupulous mechanics. For example, the idea that your vehicle must have regular oil changes every 3,000 miles is an absolute falsehood. Similarly, your technician’s advice to have your radiator flushed once a year is more for his bottom line than for preserving your cooling system. Despite this, a lot of drivers spend unnecessary time and money following such advice.

Today, I’m going to describe 2 more common fallacies about car maintenance. These are myths that are perpetuated not only by your local mechanic, but by your dealership’s service technicians. Learn them and save your money.

#1 – Frequent Tune-Ups

Unless you’re driving a vehicle that was built when disco was still the rage, your car’s engine probably doesn’t need a tune-up. The service was performed in order to adjust the engine and moving car parts during a time when carburetors were installed in every model. The newer cars only need spark plug replacements rather then the old time traditional “tune-up”. And those just need to be replaced every 50,000 miles. Everything else – the ignition, fuel injection, and idling of the car engine – is controlled by computers.

Unfortunately, dealerships continue to tell their customers that they need to bring their vehicles in for a tune-up after 60,000 miles. It is not surprising. After all, it increases their revenue.

#2 – New Air Filters

Think back to the last time you took your vehicle in for an oil change. Did the mechanic suggest a new air filter? Did he subtly imply that your car might sustain damage if you neglected to replace it? This is a frequent misconception. First, the air filter catches debris before it can enter the engine. Over an extended period of time, dust and dirt build up on the filter so that air will not pass through. At that point, it’s a good idea to replace it. But, it takes a long time for the air filter to reach that stage.

Of course, that doesn’t stop auto technicians from recommending the replacement every time you visit. From their perspective, you come to their shop ready to spend $20 on an oil change and end up spending $40. Cha Ching another higher bill?

Auto Maintenance Education Saves Money

Your vehicle requires ongoing preventative maintenance. This is what will help make it last longer. But, it’s too easy to waste valuable time and money following bad advice from mechanics and dealership technicians. Remember, their goal is to increase their sales; many of them are willing to do it at your expense.

Chances are, your vehicle doesn’t need regular tune-ups. You do not have to replace the air filters as often as the auto mechanic suggests. As always, follow your owners manual. It’s the best way to keep your car in great condition.

Finding Auto Parts Can Be Easier Then You Think

April 28th, 2009

Since I was a teenager, I’ve always enjoyed working on my own cars and trucks.  Years ago it could be a challenge making repairs to the family car.  Although in most cases older cars were easier to work on, it was always a problem obtaining technical information.  It seemed no matter how many versions of Chilton’s guides I had, they never had the information I needed.  Not being formally trained in auto mechanics, it was sometimes a challenge finding the correct part, auto performance part or car or truck accessory.

As time went by, I fell into the trap that many back yard mechanics do.  Many people told me newer cars were were beyond the scope of the backyard mechanic due to computerized systems.  As a result, regular maintenance began to be a hit and miss thing at best.  Talking to many of my neighbors in recent years has shown that many of us fell into this trap.

The growth of the internet has changed all this.  Now you only have to fire up your PC and search the web and you’ll find all the technical information you need right at your fingertips.  The greatest advancement I’ve found for home mechanics is the availability of auto performance parts.  No more going to a local auto parts store, waiting in long lines to purchase a car or truck part that isn’t available.  Today, you can easily find OEM replacement parts at discount prices right on the internet.  The best part is that you’ll find in most cases you can have your auto parts or performance parts delivered to your door and still save money over traveling to your local store.  Depending upon the size town you live in, you might have a couple auto parts stores available and the larger chain stores do offer competitive pricing.  But have you ever found yourself waiting in a long line waiting for counter service only to learn the specific part you need isn’t in stock?

All of that is a thing of the past.  Today the web makes home auto repairs easier then ever before.  You can easily find vehicle specific information and detailed answers to any questions you might have on the countless forums on the web.  So comparison shopping for a specific part or auto performance part is a breeze.  Plus you’ll find most of the web stores show you how long you will have to wait for shipping.  Recently I wanted to change brake pads in an Acura.  So I visited my favorite auto parts store online and found Acura auto parts with no problem.  In two days time I had Hawk brake pads delivered to my door and actually saved over $50 compared to my local shops.  But the additional benefit is I didn’t have to waste any time shopping locally.

So I suggest the next time you consider doing some work on your own car or truck, start your project off by searching the web for answers to any questions and great discount auto parts.
