Pros And Cons Of Original Equipment Manufacturer Auto Parts

November 13th, 2009

Your car’s alternator won’t last forever. Neither will your catalytic converter. Actually, your fuel injectors, ignition switch, and muffler can fail as well. Every auto part under your vehicle’s hood can unexpectedly expire and need to be replaced.

If you take your car to the dealership, they’ll use Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts. Conversely, the mechanic at your local garage is most likely going to use aftermarket alternatives. Which is better?

Claiming one choice is always better than the other is overly-simplistic; it ignores subtle pros and cons of each. Below, we’ll compare the advantages of investing in OEM parts versus buying their aftermarket equivalents.

The Advantages Of Aftermarket

Aftermarket components and systems are less expensive than their OEM counterparts. However, the percentage you’ll save will vary by the item your vehicle needs. Be cautious. A lot of aftermarket units seem low-priced, but hide defects that can leave you stranded at the side of the road.

Another advantage is that the quality can be just as high as Original Equipment Manufacturer systems. The reason is because the automaker is often forced to offset the performance of the component with other factors. For example, consider anti-lock braking systems. The manufacturer has to make sure the pads don’t squeal; otherwise, customers will complain. The problem is, ensuring the brake pads are silent requires accepting a mild loss in performance (to that end, high-performance brakes are often noisy).

Yet another advantage of buying after-market components is that they’re widely available. Mechanics can easily obtain any replacement part your vehicle needs. In fact, they’ll often have them in stock.

The Advantages Of OEM

OEM parts also offer significant advantages. First, you’ll always know what to expect from them. They are nearly identical to the systems that were installed within your vehicle at the time it rolled off the factory floor.

Second, you won’t need to examine a given component in order to spot defects. Original Equipment Manufacturer parts are designed to be seamless replacements and possess a consistent level of quality. That means there is no reason to be concerned with compatibility and performance issues.

Third, they are usually supported by a one-year warranty. For example, if you have your alternator replaced and it malfunctions within the first year, the automaker will replace it with another OEM alternator without cost. You might not have the same experience if the alternator were an aftermarket unit.

Which is the Better Choice?

There are a few reliable rules of thumb to follow. Anything on your car’s frame (like a body panel) that needs to be replaced should be replaced with an Original Equipment Manufacturer replacement. Second, if you’re leasing your vehicle, you should also choose OEM parts. Otherwise, you’re likely to lose your deposit when you return the car. Third, for something like an alternator or a fuel pump (a key component), OEM is always the better choice.

On the other hand, if you’re willing to take a risk (and the risk can be substantial) in order to save a few dollars, aftermarket parts may be a good investment.

The economy we are faced with we need all the ways possible to save money. It does not take a rocket scientist to notice that a lot of Americans are suffering during this economy. But instead of moaning about a lot of things, we can search out other ways to save money.

So I would like to offer some perspective from a San Diego auto repair shop owner. Now you may be thinking that I would be biased but listen to me first. After your reading of this you are going to see that it is sensible and money will be saved.

One of methods of saving money is to try and keep our cars for longer periods of time. In the heyday of this decade when the economy seemed to be so good people traded in cars left and right. They just went and traded their cars went it was older. So for the most part people just did not even think about having to maintain their car.

Well the way the economy is right now, we don’t have that luxury available anymore. Most everyone will not be able to afford going out and buying a new car in these days.People now must keep the old ones longer.  What that means is they will have to maintain their cars.

One of the major items of maintenance is being certain you are able to pass a smog check.Once your car reaches a certain age it will be a requirement. If you can’t pass the smog test that may cause very expensive repairs.  I know this first hand running my San Diego smog check shop.

There are things you can do to make sure your car passes the test. You must keep you car tuned up always. You can make certain you change the oil filter and oil.You can check to see that the muffler works good with no problems.

This is where you can lose money.  If you fail the smog test you could be in for a lot of money in repairs.  So by making sure you follow these maintenance procedures so you can save money.By doing the right things in maintaining your car now you will save yourself from major repairs later.

Don’t forget that you have to maintain your brakes as well.  With my experience with our San Diego brakes shop this is important as well. By just making sure your brake pads aren’t worn down will save your disc brakes. Not keeping it maintained can cause very expensive repairs.Follow these tips and you won’t have a problem saving money.

When you decide to buy used instead of new, you can often save up to 60 or 70 percent of the cost of a new part- even when the difference in quality is slight or none. This makes it affordable to take care of repairs that are usually considered expensive and to be able to keep your autos in top running order.

As used auto parts are a much more affordable alternative to new ones, you will likely enjoy hundreds or thousands of dollars in savings when opting for cheap used car parts.

Though cost is a big factor in deciding whether to buy new or used auto body parts, there are also many other reasons why used auto parts are a smart decision.  Thanks to the Internet and the ability to access companies like Basic Car Parts, you can find the parts you need extremely easily and quickly.

Not only can getting your car parts from a used auto parts dealer provide you with convenience and savings, but it can also lead to a shorter wait for your car parts than if you decided to get them new.

Often, when ordering new parts, there is a long waiting period because of need for assembly, backorders, or trouble with part location.  However, with used auto body parts, you have access to parts that are already assembled and ready to go throughout the nation.  This makes it very quick and easy to get the parts you need within a timely manner.
