Is It Live Or Is It Memorex - MP3 Players That Is!

September 18th, 2009

You might remember the old commercials for Memorex cassettes (or maybe not), but Memorex now produces MP3 players as well. Talk about an oversaturated market! It was difficult to find any actual reviews of the Memorex line of MP3 players, so they would seem to be something of a bargain brand at best.

Specs And So Forth!

One Memorex MP3 player is the Memorex MMP8500 Biomorph MP3 Player. Surprisingly, this was at least visually interesting…which is the best thing one can actually say about it. It seems to be an older model, that was originally priced somewhere between the low $60-range and $130 at the time.

This particular Memorex MP3 player model comes with only 128MB of memory and an FM tuner, but it now retails (if you can find it) for around $24. Although that is pretty cheap, the MMP8500 Biomorph has a lot of skipping issues and pretty much non-existent user support according to user reviews. If you’re considering purchasing one as a future stocking stuffer, it’s probably not a great idea in all honesty.

Back in the modern era, apparently Memorex did get around to creating a 1GB MP3 player, the creatively titled Memorex 1GB MP3 Player – 8565. It’s available at target.com for $79.99, although it’s suggested that you visit other sites to find a better price. Aside from the storage capacity, it was nearly impossible to find specs for the device other than the fact that it also has a LCD display.

Why exactly anyone would want one of these is debatable, as there are a lot of far superior products out there. At any rate, Memorex also has a 512MB MP3 player called the Memorex Sport MP3 Player – 512MB. The author takes no responsibility for the lack of creative names by the way. It has a blue LCD display, 512MB of memory (obviously), and an FM Tuner.

Again, there weren’t really any major specs. One assumes that since the Memorex MP3 players are stated to be “Compatible with Microsoft PlaysForSure” that they’re at least probably MP3 and WMA compatible. Suffice it to say, you might want to read the back of the box very carefully if you pop in to your local Target store.

The Memorex Sport MP3 Player retails for $64.99 according to target.com, the website rather helpfully states that they’re available at stores only, which is probably for the best given the dearth of information available. If you buy one, good luck!

Dell MP3 Players Be Not Proud

August 22nd, 2009

Well, honesty really is the best policy, and although Dell might be a successful player in the PC market, Dell and MP3 players really haven’t mixed. At the end of 2006, it was decided that Dell’s hard-drive based MP3 players would be dropped from its line of electronic products.

The Best Of Intentions

Although Dell thought it could challenge the musical Goliath that is the Apple iPod line, Dell’s line of MP3 players never really managed to put up much of a showing. The Dell Digital Jukeboxes – the DJ20 and Dell DJ30 MP3 players - have been dropped in favor of flash-drive based low capacity Dell MP3 players like the DJ Ditty.

The number in the description indicates storage capacity, so the DJ20 is a 20GB player, and the DJ30 is a 30GB player (just in case that wasn’t obvious). You may still be able to find a bargain out there if you don’t mind the fact that you probably won’t get much in the way of future support.

Initially, these Dell MP3 players did not support the PlayForSure format, which means you might have issues if you get your music via a subscription service. You might want to check to see if there was a firmware update released to fix this problem first before purchasing one. However, it does have a high storage capacity, especially if you use the WMA format instead of MP3.

As far as pricing goes, one site listed a DJ20 for $129.99. It has a screen that’s 1.9 inches and is pretty much a no-frills player. You can’t view album art or photos, as it’s you’re basic black and white LCD display. There’s also no FM tuner, but if you just want something simple it’s…acceptable.

Now for the latest Dell offering: the DJ Ditty which was mentioned earlier. The DJ Ditty is a 512MB MP3 player that’s light and functional with a small form factor. It retails for around $99, and it includes an FM tuner. The DJ Ditty also supports the PlayForSure format, so with this Dell MP3 player you don’t have to worry if you use a subscription service for your music.

It does come with five equalizer presets, but you can’t customize your own settings unfortunately. There are also a few issues with the inability to quickly navigate through titles and a less than stellar battery life, but if you’re looking for something simple and relatively easy to use when you exercise, this might be a decent choice.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Alpine radio CDE-9874
This is a great product at an extremely competative price. When you buy alpine you know that your getting the best in car-audio quality, and this satisfies that idea to every extent. Great deal, Great Product.

1 Star Dont buy
This product was a total disappointment. Sent it back. There was a problem with the RCA outputs. It caused a loud clunk sound in the subwoofers, when changing soure inputs. The seller stated Alpine never has a bad receiver. I am telling you, this one was! I bought a Kenwood afterwards, great sound, no problems.

4 Stars Great for the price; good iPod control
I replaced the factory stereo in a 2001 civic with this unit. I am very happy with my decision — made after hours of Internet research, store-room testing, etc. One thing I don’t like is that the word “Playlists” on the display shows up with a space so that it looks more like “Playlist 5.” Every time I scan for a playlist (or song, or artist), I keep thinking, what is playlist 5? What is song 5? Etc. But other than that, it’s a great stereo… and that’s something I can live with.

Pros: simple to use/learn, good ipod control, percentage search

Cons: textual display (see comment above), can’t quickly switch from a song that is playing to another song in the same playlist/album (you have to go through the whole menu system again)
