Auto Repair Labor

October 21st, 2009

To estimate the cost before going for an auto repair can be a rather confusing and rather irritating. It is especially hard to gauge auto repair labor costs as these costs tend to vary due to many reasons.

One of the most frequenly used methods is to over estimate the number of hours of labor. Therefore it is best if you have a good idea about auto repair costs in general and auto repair labor costs in particular. Online resources will help you determine an estimation for general auto repair costs and auto repair labor through rough estimations. These so called  labor guides  provide comprehensive information regarding the breakdown of auto repair costs and also gives an idea of certain details the consumer must clarify in order to minimize the cost for the operation.

Remember that though usually the auto repair labor cost is calculated using labor rate per hour multiplied by the time (in hours) spent on the task, there are many other factors that influence the auto repair labor costs. If your vehicle has any additional  gadgets  that might hinder the task it would increase the amount of time spent and would naturally increase the cost. Note that labor costs differ between certain areas and that the extent of the job would also influence the cost.

Sometimes the auto repair labor costs reflect the quality of service offered by a particular organization. So in order to compensate for their poor quality of work, they may reduce the auto repair labor charges in order to attract more customers. So you ought to watch out for these tricks! Auto repair labor costs could also be reduced by spending less time on the job and by simply using unqualified people to do the job. If a repair shop pays the mechanics on commission basis this could give incentive for them to try and raise your auto repair labor costs by cheating. So try to find a repair shop which pays a salary to its mechanics if you want to reduce the amount you pay for auto repair labor.

Other factors that contribute to auto repair costs omitting the costs for auto repair labor could be things like the age of your vehicle, how well it has been maintained, the type of the vehicle and how much it had been used.

So stop being exploted and settle for reputed auto repair companies that will provide you good quality of service while charging standard auto repair labor rates.

3 Things To Check When Your Car Doesn’t Start

October 5th, 2009

When you turn your key in the ignition and your car won’t start, a feeling of dread shoots through your mind. There are lots of things that might prevent your engine from turning over. Identifying the problem can easily become a frustrating mystery. In order to effectively troubleshoot the issue, you’ll need to have a basic understanding with regard to what happens between your ignition and the motor. There are a lot of parts along the line and any one of them can cause a glitch.

In this article, I’ll provide a short list of three things you should check when your engine fails to roar to life.

#1 – Battery

Most non-starting problems are caused by the battery. Sometimes, the poles become corroded and the connection suffers. Sometimes the battery drains so much it doesn’t carry a suffient charge to fire the engine. In some cases, it dies completely.

Use battery cleaner to remove corroision on the poles. If, after cleaning the poles, you’re still unable to turn the motor, it’s likely that your battery is drained or dead. Unless you have a tester with which to gauge the amperage, jump start your vehicle. It’s pretty safe to assume that if it starts immediately, you need a new battery.

#2 – Ignition Switch

Although a malfunction in an ignition switch is not as common as a dead battery, it does happen and luckily it is easy to check. To be certain that your switch is working properly, turn your key so that your car is “on” (as opposed to the “starting” position). Take a look at your dashboard. Indicator warnings appear on the dash if your ignition is, indeed, working. This is normal. Now, turn the key further (to “start”). The warning indicators should disappear.

You can also test the switch by turning your headlights on prior to starting your vehicle. If, when you try to crank the engine, the lamps do not dim, your switch is bad.

#3 – Starter Connection

You won’t be able to easily test whether your starter is working properly, but you can test the connection. In the same way that batteries can accumulate corrosion, so too, can your vehicle’s starter. When this happens, it reduces the integrity of the connection and can prevent your motor from cranking. If there is no corrosion, but you still suspect that your starter is causing the issue, you can use a circuit tester to test the connection.

Cars, trucks, and SUVs continue to leave us stranded due to faulty connections or failing parts. The good news is that your vehicle isn’t as mysterious as you might think. While there are many components under the hood that can prevent your engine from turning over, most problems are associated with the battery, ignition switch, and starter. Armed with a circuit tester, jumper cables, and a friend, you’ll often be able to fix the problem without taking your car to a repair shop.

Transmission problem with used cars

August 24th, 2009

As the bad economy touches more people it will also change their buying habits. One of those big areas that it has affected is buying cars. When times weren’t so bad peole would just go out and purchase a new car.Now if they are in need of another vehicle they have to buy it used. That isn’t so horrible since if you do it right you can get a lot of value with a used car.  But if you do it wrong it could cost you more money.

One areas that is easily done wrong is the transmission.Even though the transmissions they make now are more reliable fixing them is still expensive.  In other words it is easy to break and expensive to fix.  That is a bad combination and I have seen many of my clients suffer from this in my San Marcos transmission repair company.  They go out and buy a used car and they end up spending thousands more.

One thing you are able to do is check the vehicle history.  You want to ask the seller for any service records. That will show you if it was possibly a rental.Or it will let you see if this vehicle had been in any accidents. So what you are going to want to find out is if it had any issues with the transmission.  That is one thing I have all my clients of my Carlsbad transmission repair shop to do is check the vehicle’s records.

Another thing you can do is is check the transmission fluid level. What you are going to have to do is have the car idle for a little while.  Then you just check the transmission dipstick.  If it is low it could be a transmission leak.  If the transmission fluid is dirty or black avoid buying that car.It is a good gauge that there may be transmission problems.  The last thing you want to do is buy a used car then end up having to bring it into my San Marcos auto repair shop to fix the transmission.Perform these steps and you will save a lot of money.

Why Use a Speed Camera Detector?

May 9th, 2009

Speed Camera Detector

For those of us living in the UK, driving has become risky to our pockets.  All it takes is driving just a little too fast in the direct line of site of a dreaded speed camera, and you’re sure to get fined or points taken off for your mistake. If you are unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and use the same route daily – you’ll probably end up paying for it!  That’s why considering getting a detection device is so important for you.

What, exactly, are these? These are devices that can be setup on the side of the road or above the road that can determine just how fast your vehicle is travelling. The owners of the speed cameras cant lose – they either control your driving habits, or earn revenue when you break them! The system isn’t foolproof, and camera detectors can help!

There are a plethors of devices available in the UK.  Currently, there are three types of detectors in use in the UK.A popular type is a system that pings messages to the sending devices, and are radar and laser based.  The returning signal tells the camera just how fast the vehicle is moving.  Other speed detection devices use humps in the road to gauge how fast a car is moving.  If someone drives too fast over the humps, then the camera turns on and captures them.  The last method is one that uses photos to detect a vehicle’s speed.  The camera takes a picture of the vehicle at one spot and then another picture at a spot further ahead.  The time stamp difference between the photos indicates how fast the vehicle was moving.

So, how can you beat all of those possibilities?  There are several devices on the market that can give you an edge. They can tell you that there is a camera ahead, and give you the opportunity to reduce your speed. If you’re a speedster, then this will help! These devices help you avoid fines, and will hopefully save your license.

If you invest in a good speed camera detector, they will be able to detect radar and laser bursts, and warn you accordingly.Competitor products have a database of national cameras, and will advise you of their status – giving you the time needed to slow down. The winning factor for your choice of camera detector should be based around the added benefits of the device, such as detecting all the different camera types.

An added feature that makes it hard for those wanting to make camera detectors illegal is that many detectors not only warn you of speed traps but also the speed limit on the road you are driving.  This makes it easy to classify any detection device as a driving aid, rather than a device used to avoid speeding traps.

It is also a fact that those with detectors are less involved in accidents, so why would anyone want to make them illegal unless there was some concern about losing revenue because of less tickets being issued! Is there really a problem with giving drivers control over the aids they use?

The pricing model for speed cameras has evolved to an annual subscripton model for service.  But if you are a frequent speeder, this may be more than worth while.Always review the products available on the market, as new products are hitting the shelves frequently.

This all sounds well and good, but you may be wondering whether or not these detection devices are legal.Thankfully, in the UK speed detectors are currently legal and wont attract a penalty.  There are, however, efforts being made with such bills as the Road Safety Bill to make it illegal to use speed camera jammers and detectors.

The question really has to be what the motive is behind speeding traps and cameras – is it to generate revenue, or to help public safety.  The answer is probably a little of both.  If you consider the idea that they encourage speed camera detectors which in turn make motorists aware of their driving habits, then they do, in fact, increase safety on Britain’s highways.

The benefit of a verbal warning from the speed camera detector is that it enables you to keep a visual focus on the driving environment, thus enhancing safety. If we can enable drivers to only focus on the road, then surely this is a benefit!  And with technologies crossing over, it wont be long until speed camera detectors are incorporated into GPS navigation systems, phone systems and the stereo systems of new cars.Without a doubt, the computer within the car will end up doing everything, GPS, Health and Camera Detection!

You may think or believe that you are the safest driver out there – however, there is always the unknown element which is the reason you should have the said devide for safety. Being aware of the speed limits and where the speed cameras are can go a long way to saving you a lot of money and keeping you safe!
