2011 Chryser Imperial Without Suicide Doors

September 17th, 2009

A venerable name in autodom is being resurrected and it will shortly grace the body of a huge, rear wheel drive luxury car. After a successful “concept car” debut at a pair of recent vehicle shows, the Chrysler Imperial will be built and should be in U.S. Showrooms in 2010. Yes, it is going to be a long wait for the Imperial’s return but the vehicle must first await extra changes within DaimlerChrysler before it can be built. Read on to find out more on the Imperial’s impending return.

The Chrysler Imperial that has been now making the rounds at various auto shows has been well received. Visitors have remarked favorably about the automobile’s Bentley like look as well as its gaping interior and luxury appointments. Currently, the brand has nothing bigger or more splendid to supply buyers who might want to upgrade from the 300C, thus Chrysler has been frequently losing buyers to more luxurious brands, something parent DaimlerChrysler [DCX] wants to stem.

The Imperial name can be traced all the way back to 1926 when Walter P. Chrysler made a decision to take on Lincoln and Packard with a luxury model all of its own. From its inception, the Imperial has always represented the top of the line auto for Chrysler and it has, at various times, been promoted as its own make. Numerous versions of the Imperial have shown up over time, with a lot of them being ultra lush versions of Chrysler’s New Yorker model.

The 2011 Chrysler Imperial will be similar in design to the concept car, but without the suicide doors. Chrysler put the special doors on the concept car in order to to make it simpler for auto show visitors to see into the auto. Still, reports from the company are implying that the twenty-two in. Wheels, Bentley grille, boxy body, and leather/wood trim would be included. Costs for the Imperial may not be announced for several more years, but it could retail for as high as $60,000 according to reports. Now , the top of the line 300C maxes out about $42,000.

So, why the hold up? Well, for one thing the Imperial program will be an additional cost for DCX. Currently, the company is in the process of making its Mercedes line up more profitable and that involves the expense of updating many models. based on the Mercedes “R Class” body, the approaching Imperial is likely to be built on a more modern version of the R Class platform. Both automobiles would arrive in dealer showrooms at the same time as 2011 models, therefore the long lead time.

The Imperial idea sits on a frame with a 123 in. Wheelbase. The car measures 214 long, much longer than the 300C. Reports are indicating that the tenet car dimensions are probably going to be retained.

For Chrysler fans, the Imperial represents further bracing of the Chrysler-Mercedes relationship. By using a Mercedes platform, the Imperial can be built and will give Chrysler a much needed product. With a standard V8 mated to a five or six speed automatic the car will certainly not be on the fuel efficient side. However, my best guess is that the car will also come optionally equipped with a thrifty Mercedes built turbo diesel, a first for any Chrysler car.

Dodge New Exciting Cars

July 3rd, 2009

If you are a car fan you know that part of the fun of following the market is examining new models as they enter the showroom. There’s just something special about a new car: the smell, the look, the price tag! For some 17,000,000 Yank drivers a new automobile is in their future, while many others opt for the used car market. Some of the autos on the market today are hot, hot, hot! Let’s take a look at many new and future offerings from Dodge.

Thanks in part to new possession [Daimler Benz purchased the Chrysler Concern in 1998] a fresh infusion of great looking Dodge models have hit a showroom near you. Extra models are shortly to appear and the refresh that Dodge has been receiving is nothing but astonishing. These are some of my favorites:

Magnum – Who said that a station lorry should resemble a family hauler? The Magnum sure doesn’t. With a menacing grille and a rakish exterior, the Magnum is a true man pleaser while also giving girls a bit additional room in the back to haul stuff. Chuck in a Hemi and the Magnum truly rocks!

Charger – O.K , so the new Charger has 4 doors. Well, you can’t have everything. You can have macho looks, a powerful engine, and an automobile that is sure to compete with anything that Japan or Germany throws its way. Word has it that DaimlerChrysler is considering a coupe version. Now, wouldn’t that be cool!

Caliber – Bye, bye Neon. The Neon served Dodge well, but it’s not in the same caliber as the Caliber. Joke intended. To get introduced in Spring 2006 as a 2007 model, the Caliber will have three engine selections : 1.8, 2.0, and 2.4 I4s, a steadily available transaxle, and all wheel drive. In addition, 2.0L diesel engines will be available outside of the North American market – why not here? – as DaimlerChrysler sets to introduce the Dodge name into new markets.

Other Dodge automobiles that are getting noticed include the Ram and Dakota pick up trucks, the Durango SUV and the soon to be introduced Dodge Nitro, the division’s version of the compact Jeep Freedom . Oh, yeah, who could forget the 510-hp V10 Viper? Can you say, Corvette beater?

One word you cannot associate with Dodge anymore is the word, “boring.” Exciting cars, vans, and SUVs for a market craving these kinds of hot automobiles. I guess the “ram” insignia truly does befit the name.

BMW On Pace to Outsell Mercedes

June 22nd, 2009

It’s a close race, one that likely will not result in deep price cutting to move models, but is certain however to be on the minds of managers employed by two automakers until the clock strikes midnight for the final time this year. What the race is all about is this: the evergreen sales battle between two German automakers, BMW and Mercedes, with BMW predicted to pass Mercedes in world sales totals for 2005. The implications are strong for each automaker and will set the tone for the way each company produces and markets vehicles from 2006 forward.

Mercedes finishing second to BMW is not a comfortable taste for DaimlerChrysler, parent of Mercedes and now owner of The Chrysler Group, maker of Jeeps, Dodges, and Chryslers. Only Volkswagen sells more autos than either make, but when it comes to a predominately luxury line up Mercedes and BMW battle alone amongst German makes with Audi a distant third.

Unlike Yankee automakers, Mercedes is not very likely to engage in deep price cuts to draw in consumers and “steal” sales that they might have made in 2006 for 2005 to stave off BMW. Still, buyers of Mercedes vehicles should find an even friendlier showroom in which to shop when they barter the price on their “C”, “E”, or “M” Classes of vehicles.

So, precisely what has caused the shift in sales? Well, published reports indicate that Mercedes sales continue to rise, but slowly. On the other hand, BMW sales growth are in the double digit category which is what has pushed BMW before Mercedes so far this year. Oddly, it isn’t the posh autos in each automakers’ fold that is spelling the difference. Unknown by many Americans, both BMW and Mercedes sell autos that are smaller and less plush than the cars that appear in the states. Vehicles that compete exactly against Volkswagen’s Golf and offerings from GM, Ford, many Eastern automakers, and others.

Yes, it’s correct. Not all BMW or Mercedes models are luxury cars. Unlike in the USA where a Cadillac is totally a luxury car, both German brands produce vehicles for the rank and file driver too. It is these types of vehicles that have fueled both automakers expansion and is likely behind BMW jumping before Mercedes.

To counter BMW’s surge, Mercedes does have an ace up its sleeve: the arrival of 1 or 2 smaller lines of cars to the U.S. Market by 2007. If you have not worked it out yet, Mercedes has “A” and “B” Class automobiles that are smaller and less costly than the present “baby” Mercedes, what we call the “C” Class. Mercedes hopes that the US market is prepared for less dear vehicles sporting the venerable Mercedes name and that these sales will push Mercedes back into the lead.

Of course, what is good for BMW as the automaker explores bringing its “1″ and “2″ series autos to the US to compete for sales. Both lines of vehicles are positioned against Mercedes “A” and “B” class automobiles and are the same autos that have bumped BMW’s sales figures up.

Now if only Mercedes would consider importing it’s SMART auto to the US market.
