Fluid Leaks And How To Handle Them

March 9th, 2010

As important as the individual parts and systems under your hood are to the operation of your car, fluids ensure those components continue working problem-free. Unfortunately, leaks can happen. While they may appear harmless, they can jeopardize your vehicle’s safety if you allow them to persist. These leakages may spring from a broken gasket, worn seal, and similar problems.

In this article, we’ll provide an overview of the types of fluids your vehicle needs in order to operate seamlessly. Each can begin leaking. In most cases, the problem begins with a few drops and steadily worsens over time, leading to large repair bills down the road.

Engine Oil

Your vehicle’s engine is comprised of a myriad of moving parts. Oil is necessary to prevent those parts from building excess heat and friction, destroying each other in the process. An engine that lacks oil is likely to overheat.

You should be in the habit of checking your oil level at least once a month. That way, you can replenish the oil if the level is low. If you observe a leak direclty under your engine, mention it to your technician so that it can be resolved as soon as possible.

Coolant

Coolant is required to transfer heat from your engine to your radiator and thus, help prevent the engine from overheating. Like oil, coolant can leak. The problem is, leakages can form in a variety of places, making it difficult to locate the source. For example, coolant can leak from a bad seal on the water pump, a worn connection on the radiator, or from any of a number of deteriorating hoses. If left unresolved, your engine will eventually sustain damage.

Check the level of coolant in your radiator once a month (ideally, at the same time you check the oil). If it’s low, replenish it and monitor leaks that may have developed. If you find yourself constantly replenishing the coolant, have a mechanic find and fix the leak quickly.

Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid works similarly to motor oil. It provides necessary lubrication for the moving parts; without it, your transmission would quickly begin to experience severe problems. Most of the leaks are due to worn seals and gaskets that deteriorate over the years. In this occurence, you’ll usually notice a reddish fluid directly unde the assembly.

A mechanic can usually repair these type of problems without removing the transmission from your vehicle (though every assembly has a slightly different construction). The exception is the front seal. If it develops a leak, the transmission will probably need to be lifted. That will dramatically increase your repair bill.

Steering Fluid

Normally, your vehicle should not use up or “burn” steering fluid. If you check the reservoir and notice the level is low, the reason is usually because a leakage has formed. Look at the ground underneath your car. The fluid can be seen either toward the front under the steering pump or near the rear under the steering rack. Depending on the size of the leak, you may be able to postpone repairs by replenishing the steering fluid as needed.

Brake Fluid

When you hit the brakes, fluid travels form the master cylidner to your front and real brakes. This is the result of hydraulic pressure. The good news is that the fluid rarely leaks because there are few seals throughout the system. The bad news is that the few seals that are part of the system are made from rubber. They can potentially deteriorate with time. As with other fluids, periodically check the level (in the master cylinder reservoir) and replenish it when necessary.

If you keep your vehicle long enough, individual components will eventually fail. However, you can prolong the life of major systems (e.g. engine, transmission, etc.) by having fluid leaks resolved as quickly as possible.

Driving – Some Basics

March 6th, 2010

When you buy a used or pre-owned vehicle, and order a vehicle history report, you may see a section marked “drivability.” It will often be accompanied by a rating. This confuses a lot of people. Most drivers intuitively understand labels such as “4-wheel alignment,” “coolant flushed,” and “no structural damage.” But, few know how to interpret “drivability.”

The term actually encompasses an assortment of criteria that measure a car’s responsiveness to normal driving conditions. It includes cold starts, “no crank” conditions, hesitation and related perfomrance issues.

Below, we’ll take a closer look at each of the main areas addressed by a vehicle’s drivability rating. You’ll find the following information valuable in the event you decide to shop for a pre-owned car.

Does The Engine Crank?

If the engine fails to crank, the culprit is likely the starter or the battery. Starter problem often become apparent very slowly. You may start noticing a slow crank condition or odd sounds coming from the starter. Battery related issues can run the spectrum from lack of juice to a bad connection cause by corrosion.

It Cranks, But Fails To Start

If your vehicle’s engine cranks, but does not start, the problem involves the spark, fuel delivery, or compression. For example, your ignition system might be malfunctioning; your fuel pump may be failing; you may have a vacuum leak reducing compression. Each of these factors will prevent your car from starting even if the engine manages to turns over.

The Car Stalls Out And Dies

Suppose your engine turns over and your car starts, but it stalls shortly thereafter. This type of situation suggests the ignition system is fine. Howeve, something may be amiss with the gasoline. The problem may involve the fuel pump, water-heavy gasoline, or a failing relay.

Hesitation While Accelerating

There are many issues that can lead to hesitation while accelerating. For example, a failing fuel pump can play a role as can a clogged catalytic converter. The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor may be faulty or the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system might be defective. There may also be a vacuum leak impacting compression.

Another problem similar to hesitation is an overall lack of power under load. For example, when pulling heavy loads up an incline, it may seem as if your vehicle is running low on fuel. The potential causes of this issue are the same as those which cause hesitation: obstructed catalytic converter, failing fuel pump, EGR problems, etc.

Misfiring Under Load

If your vehicle begins to misfire when accelerating, the issue will usually involve a vacuum leak. Fortunately, vacuum leaks can often be resolved easily by replacing hoses that have become worn and begun to deteriorate. The challenge is finding the location of the leak.

There are also many other potential causes for a misfire under load. A clogged fuel injector, bad spark plugs, failing ignition coil, and a weak fuel pump can each contribute to the problem.

Temperature Related Drivability Issues

If you notice your vehicle experiences problems only when the temperature is hot, the issue may involve a shorting circuit board. This, in turn, can impact the powertrain control module (PCM), which helps manage spark timing, emissions, oxygen sensors, and other systems.

Your vehicle’s drivability encompasses a variety of potential conditions that affect its operation. Each problem, as briefly described above, might be caused by one of several factors. Identifying the problem area is not always easy, especially in cases where mulitple failures may by contributing to a given problem.

If you have experience working under the hood (and own a few special tools), you may be able to diagnose and repair the underlying issues. Otherwise, plan to have a trained mechanic do the job for you.  Just make sure you investigate how much the auto parts are supposed to cost.

7 Critical Things You Should Know About Transmission Care

December 16th, 2009

You might not know each and every function of your car parts, and because of this, with many components functioning at the same time, you wouldn’t know which part exactly needs your attention. One of the most important parts of your vehicle is the transmission. But how can you care for it and save money with transmission repair?I provided helpful tips below on how you can maintain caring for your transmission.

*Keep An Eye On Your Transmission Fluid

Properly maintaining your transmission fluid and filter will prolong the life of your vehicle and save you thousands of dollars in replacement costs down the road. Monitor your transmission fluid level, so you would know the condition of the transmission. You would want to know if the fluid is bright and clean.

Manual transmission fluids usually require less frequent changing. If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, it has a dipstick located in the engine compartment under the bonnet/hood. Keep the fluid filled to its proper level. Things are usually okay when the fluid is clean and red in color. If the color is slightly brown, smells burnt, has a pink milkshake-like consistency, or is black, it is time to see your automotive transmission repair specialist.

*Change Your Transmission Fluid

Make sure to change your transmission fluid regularly, and more often in high stress conditions. Transmission fluid lubricates, cleans and cools are the transmission parts inside while providing the hydraulic pressure to make all of the components work together. Malfunction can’t be far away when the fluid loses its ability to perform those tasks efficiently. It is best to change fluids with a minimum of twice a year.

*Make Sure Your Engine Is Properly Tuned

An engine that isn’t properly tuned can display symptoms similar to a transmission problem.

*Check Your Vehicle’s Cooling System Twice a Year

Have your cooling system checked for leaks, proper coolant level and strength.

Overheating and freeze-up conditions may be brought over by your anti-freeze, being less effective over time.

*Be On The Lookout For Any Malfunctions

Being aware of the early signs of transmission repair and providing a solution for it saves you money because the longer you drive with a malfunctioning transmission, the more damage you may cause, and the more money it may cost you.

*Leave The Repair To The Experts

Okay, you suspect something is wrong with your transmission. Then, you may think it would cost you less if you ask a friend or any unqualified person to fix your transmission for a much lower price, or for free.Doing so may bring you more harm than good, and make you spend more money in the future.

*An Ounce Of Prevention Is Better Than A Pound Of Cure

Allow your vehicle to have a complete physical check up once a year.Have your lights, steering and brakes checked, as these are your safety components. Remember that a poor running engine or certain transmission problems can be a safety hazard.

Prevention is a great way of taking care of your transmission. You may encounter transmission problems that can be fixed with a simple filter change, but more often, this is not the case. Transmission repair can be over thousands of dollars. If you cannot change gears, then you cannot drive your car.If you encounter this problem, visit a transmission repair specialist.  If you happen to live in Florida, drop by a very competent Orlando transmission repair shop. They are efficient, honest and trained specialists who would be able to address your transmission needs.

Looking After Your Car: Car Covers, Tire Rotation and Other Hints

November 24th, 2009

You want your car to be in good running shape and looking good. If you do general maintenance on your vehicle regularly you will have a car that runs more efficiently; which means you will get better gas mileage. You don’t want to get stranded, whether it is in the sweltering summer heat or in the cold winter months.

Make sure your car is in good condition before planning a road trip. You should pay particular attention to your tires. If it has been over 7,500 miles since you had your tires rotated you should have that done before you go on a trip. You will also want to check and inspect your tires for any uneven wear.

At the same time you are inspecting your tires, you should also check the tire pressure. If you are unsure of what the pressure should be, you can look in your owner’s manual. Most of the time you can also find out what the tire pressure should be by looking on the inside of your car door. You will get better gas mileage if you keep the recommended pressure in your tires.

Before you get on the road you should make sure that your air conditioning system is working properly. You will want to make sure all hoses are in good condition and have no leaks or cracks. When you are inspecting the hoses make sure the clamps are tight also. If they are loose you can tighten them with a screwdriver. Before a road trip, make sure you make sure the car is full of coolant and will work properly.

Make sure you get a tune up before any type of road trip. The oil and oil filter should be changed. This is the time to replace worn windshield wiper blades and to make sure the windshield washer fluid is full. When you are getting a tune up make sure you have all fluids checked, including brakes, transmission, and power steering.

When you are not driving your vehicle you should use a car cover to protect it against the elements. Car covers are made of all types of materials that are designed to be used in all types of weather. You can find custom covers that are made of breathable materials and are also water resistant. You can find covers that are designed to protect your vehicle from harmful UV rays.

A car cover that doesn’t fit your car correctly can actually do more harm to your car than if you left it uncovered. A loosely fitting car cover can slap against your car and can cause severe damage to your car’s paint finish. That is why you should invest in a custom fit car cover for your specific car.

There are custom car covers that are made for all make and models of vehicles. No matter what type of car you have, you will be able to find a car cover that is perfect for your vehicle.
