Choosing the Right Car Cover for Your Car

December 29th, 2009

Many things can cause damage to your car’s paint finish. You not only want to protect the paint, you will also want to protect the rest of the car - including the tires. You want to wash and wax your car regularly and you also want to make sure you don’t forget to clean the tires and wheels as well. Make sure your car is clean before using a car cover to keep it looking new for a long time.

Tree sap and bird droppings can cause major damage to your paint finish which should be removed as soon as possible. Bird droppings are highly acidic and will literally remove the paint from your car if they are left to bake onto the paintwork in the hot sun. If they have dried onto the surface of your car, it is best to wet the droppings first and then wipe off with a soft damp cloth. You should never try to just peel them off of the car as you may take a layer of paint off the surface in the process.

You also must pay special attention to your tires when you clean your car. If you don’t pay attention to the wheels, the brake dust that accumulates can cause etching onto your wheels. You want the wheels to look as good as the rest of your vehicle, so make sure you remove the brake dust when you are washing your car. Your brake pads are made of several things that can damage the wheels including metal filings and polymer adhesives and it is this which turns into the brake dust that accumulates on your wheels. Remember your wheels are one of the first things anyone will notice when they look at your vehicle.

You can use wheel protectant to protect your wheels in between washings. Simply spray or pour a small amount of product onto a soft cloth before you apply it to the wheels and remember, all you need to do is to put a thin coat of protectant on the wheels and let it dry. You can then buff your wheels until they shine like new and this is why you should not over apply the protectant - because you will spend a lot of time polishing it off again. Tire cleaner on your tires doesn’t simply make them look good, it will also protect them from the elements. If you do this on a regular basis when you wash the car the entire vehicle will be shiny and attractive and especially the eye-catching aspects of the vehicle.

Custom car covers come in a variety of colors, materials and types. The style and material you choose will depend on the kind of protection you want. It also depends on whether the vehicle will be stored outside or indoors. There are specific covers designed for storing a vehicle for long term and ones that provide UV protection, water resistance and have the ability to “breathe” so air circulates and moisture and mold build-up are avoided.

To get the maximum protection out of a car cover, it has to conform to your vehicle’s body shape and fit securely around the vehicle. If you park your car outdoors, protect it with a cover suitable for outdoor hazards and also to help prevent your car from being stolen. A car cover is a good investment and will keep your car looking good for years to come.

Pros And Cons Of Original Equipment Manufacturer Auto Parts

November 13th, 2009

Your car’s alternator won’t last forever. Neither will your catalytic converter. Actually, your fuel injectors, ignition switch, and muffler can fail as well. Every auto part under your vehicle’s hood can unexpectedly expire and need to be replaced.

If you take your car to the dealership, they’ll use Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts. Conversely, the mechanic at your local garage is most likely going to use aftermarket alternatives. Which is better?

Claiming one choice is always better than the other is overly-simplistic; it ignores subtle pros and cons of each. Below, we’ll compare the advantages of investing in OEM parts versus buying their aftermarket equivalents.

The Advantages Of Aftermarket

Aftermarket components and systems are less expensive than their OEM counterparts. However, the percentage you’ll save will vary by the item your vehicle needs. Be cautious. A lot of aftermarket units seem low-priced, but hide defects that can leave you stranded at the side of the road.

Another advantage is that the quality can be just as high as Original Equipment Manufacturer systems. The reason is because the automaker is often forced to offset the performance of the component with other factors. For example, consider anti-lock braking systems. The manufacturer has to make sure the pads don’t squeal; otherwise, customers will complain. The problem is, ensuring the brake pads are silent requires accepting a mild loss in performance (to that end, high-performance brakes are often noisy).

Yet another advantage of buying after-market components is that they’re widely available. Mechanics can easily obtain any replacement part your vehicle needs. In fact, they’ll often have them in stock.

The Advantages Of OEM

OEM parts also offer significant advantages. First, you’ll always know what to expect from them. They are nearly identical to the systems that were installed within your vehicle at the time it rolled off the factory floor.

Second, you won’t need to examine a given component in order to spot defects. Original Equipment Manufacturer parts are designed to be seamless replacements and possess a consistent level of quality. That means there is no reason to be concerned with compatibility and performance issues.

Third, they are usually supported by a one-year warranty. For example, if you have your alternator replaced and it malfunctions within the first year, the automaker will replace it with another OEM alternator without cost. You might not have the same experience if the alternator were an aftermarket unit.

Which is the Better Choice?

There are a few reliable rules of thumb to follow. Anything on your car’s frame (like a body panel) that needs to be replaced should be replaced with an Original Equipment Manufacturer replacement. Second, if you’re leasing your vehicle, you should also choose OEM parts. Otherwise, you’re likely to lose your deposit when you return the car. Third, for something like an alternator or a fuel pump (a key component), OEM is always the better choice.

On the other hand, if you’re willing to take a risk (and the risk can be substantial) in order to save a few dollars, aftermarket parts may be a good investment.

How Stability Control Works On New Cars

June 29th, 2009

We have all seen the TV commercials where the family’s life was saved by automatic stability control. The story is usually set against the back drop of a wet stormy night when suddenly a boulder falls directly onto the road right in front of our hero. The TV ad shows the driver pulling on the wheel and safely avoiding an accident thanks to the stability control system.

Many people see these commercials and think that this is pretty interesting automotive technology. Some people may not know that this safety feature is operated by the ABS system. Although keep in mind when you are buying a new car that various types of stability control systems are found on today’s vehicles.

Just as on traction systems stability controls are based and linked to the ABS system and on some vehicles they are linked to both the brake and electronic suspension systems. Several upscale vehicles offer a switch that can disable the traction control seperate from the stability control system.

Automatic stability control operation

Again, the systems will differ between vehicle manufacturers, but most stability control systems will momentarily apply the disc brake pads at one wheel to correct a oversteer or an understeer condition. The control unit receives signals from the speed sensors plus some units will have a lateral acceleration or G-force sensor. The latest releases might be equipped with a steering angle sensor.

Understeer is best described as a condition where the automobile is slow to respond to driver steering input. A vehicle is in a oversteer condition when it is fishtailing or the rear end moves out of the center tracking position. When the system senses understeer or oversteer in a turn the brakes at the appropriate rear wheel is applied.

Relying on the input from the sensors and the computer programming the system calculates if the vehicle is going exactly in the direction in which it is being steered. If there is a difference between what the drivers asking for and what the vehicle is doing the system will ideally correct this situation by applying one of the brakes in the four corners.

Stability control advanced Systems

This advanced control system will use the steering angle to calculate the path the driver has selected. It will then monitor the lateral sensor and the G-forces on the vehicle to measure where the vehicle is actually going.

Stability control systems can help control the vehicle during acceleration, braking, and coasting. If emergency braking is applied and over steer or understeering is senced increased brake fluid pressure is sent to the caliper needed to maintain driver control.

It did take us some time as consumers to get use to ABS and traction control technologies. But they have been proven to provide a safer driving experience. These automatic stability control systems show the same promise to improve automobile safety. Over time as automotive diagnosis and technologies improve, we may even see them as government mandated standard safety equipment.

The Importance of Maintaining Your Brakes

June 19th, 2009

One of the things taken for granted in this world is driving a car.It has become almost like a routine and a mindless activity for some people. You see people doing all kinds of things like doing makeup, reading, or talking on the phone, etc. while driving.

But if you really thought about it, your life is on the line everytime you drive a car.Whoever is at fault isn't the focal point of this article, but accidents do happen.

One of the ways accidents are caused is through brake failure.Your brakes qualifies as one of the critical parts of your vehicle.Unfortunately, if it's out of sight it is out of mind.  I have seen this firsthand with my San Diego brakes shop.

Your brakes is most definitely not in sight. But it is the one part of your automobile that you have to regularly maintain.  Whether you do it yourself, or hire a San Diego auto repair shop, you have to maintain it.After all, the safety of your life and maybe your family's life could depend on it.

With that being the case, brake maintenance is relatively easy.  You can either go to a brake repair shop or you can learn how to do it yourself.

Either way, the two main things you need to look at are the brake fluid level and the brake pad condition. If you are vigilant in keeping these two points maintained, your brakes will be safe.

When checking the brake fluid levels all you need to do is locate the fluid reservoir level.  It is usually marked and has a 'min' line and a 'max' line.Make sure the fluids are not below the 'min' line and you should be okay.

Also check to make sure that your brake fluid is clear and has a yellow color to it.  If it is not, you will have to flush the brakes and replace it with new fluid.

Brake fluids maintenance are the easy part. The difficult part is maintaining your brake pads.  For this, more often than not you will need a brakes repair company like my San Diego brake shop.

Usually the brake pads tell you they need to be replaced when you hear some screeching sounds when you are braking.

If so, get them checked and if need be, replaced as soon as you can. Brake pads are difficult to control or stop if it is worn.

With your safety and your passenger's safety directly effected, this is a no brainer. Get it checked and if you have to, go and get your brakes fixed.

Following these 2 maintenance steps will keep your car safe for every driving occasion.
